This site is still a work in progress and we hope to fill it with interesting and useful information in the comming months.
Born and raised in Dusseldorf, Joseph Pilates was a sickly child who suffered from illnesses such as asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, which resulted in twisted limbs and a stunted bone structure. Determined to overcome his ailments and weaknesses, Joseph Pilates developed a system of exercises that he referred to as ÔThe Art of ContrologyÕ. The foundations of this revolutionary system were to become what we know today as the Pilates Matwork. Originally focused on developing movements that would correct his own disabilities, Joseph Pilates went much further with is work. While encamped on the Isle of Man during World War I, he came into contact with patients who were suffering from damaged limbs and were bedridden. Motivated by the fact that these patients were unable to perform his system of matwork, Joseph modified the exercises by using bedsprings attached to the bed frames, which supported the damaged limbs and allowed the movements to be done safely. Witnessing the success of regained mobility and muscle toning despite their limitations,
inspired Joseph and set the stage for an expanded vision which included apparatus.
In the mid 1920s, Joseph Pilates moved to NYC and began working with the dance community. Many of his earliest students in the U.S. and his last were from the dance community and much of his work is remembered in this context.
His legacy and his work, now known simply as ÔPilatesÕ, revolutionized the fitness world. A few of Joseph PilatesÕ original students are still teaching, though much of the work has been handed down and still more has evolved to include variations stemming from his system. There are, today, many Pilates methods and the various incarnations are taught and practiced throughout the world. Despite the slight differences and advancements in the specific exercises and routines, the basic principles have endured. The original 8 Contrology/Pilates principles include: Concentration, Breath, Centering, Control, Precision, Flow, Isolation and Routine.
